In high school, the end-of-year achievement score is the average of your course grades weighted by their weekly class hours: each grade is multiplied by the weekly hours of that course, and the total is divided by the total number of hours. A mathematics course taught 6 hours a week therefore moves the average three times as much as a 2-hour elective.

Enter one line per course: the weekly hours first, then the end-of-year grade (0-100). The results give your weighted average, a course-by-course breakdown, and your certificate status under the Ministry of National Education criteria - a certificate of achievement at 85 and above, or a certificate of appreciation between 70 and 84.99. The common mistake is to ignore the class hours and take a plain average of the grades; courses with more weekly hours move the average proportionally more.

Worked Examples

A student who earns an achievement certificate

For hours of 4, 6, 5, and 2 with grades of 85, 90, 75, and 100, the hours × grade products are 340.00 + 540.00 + 375.00 + 200.00; dividing that total by 17 hours gives an average of 85.59, and the student receives a Certificate of Achievement.

Right on the appreciation certificate line

The hours × grade products add up as 432.00 + 272.00 + 400.00 + 195.00; dividing by 18 total hours gives an average of 72.17. That average is inside the appreciation range and below the achievement threshold, so a Certificate of Appreciation is awarded.

A failing course blocks the certificate

The hours × grade products are 440.00 + 368.00 + 510.00 and dividing by 15 total hours gives an average of 87.87; that is above the achievement threshold, but because a failing course is present the student receives no certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the achievement and appreciation certificate thresholds?
Under the secondary education regulations of the Ministry of National Education, a student whose weighted term average is between 70.00 and 84.99 receives a certificate of appreciation, and a student at 85.00 and above receives a certificate of achievement. Both require that no course is failing.
What counts as a failing course?
A course whose end-of-year grade falls below 50 counts as failing (the passing grade is 50). A student with a failing course cannot receive an achievement or appreciation certificate even if the overall average is above 85.
Why is the average weighted by class hours?
The regulations define the end-of-year achievement score as an average weighted by the weekly class hours of each course. A core subject taught 6 hours a week therefore carries a larger share of the average than courses taught for 1 or 2 hours.
How is a term grade formed?
A course's term grade is the average of that term's written exams, performance work, and any project scores. The end-of-year grade is then the arithmetic mean of the two term grades; you can enter either end-of-year or term grades in this calculator.
Is this average used in university placement?
Yes, indirectly. Your end-of-year achievement scores determine your diploma grade, and your diploma grade determines the secondary school achievement score used in university placement. That score is five times the diploma grade and is added to the placement score with a coefficient of 0.12.
Do elective courses count toward the average?
Yes - every course graded numerically is included in proportion to its weekly hours. Courses that are not graded numerically (pass/fail courses, for example) are left out of the average.
