GPA (Grade Point Average) Calculator

EducationLast updated: August 17, 2026

At university, the cumulative weighted grade point average is found by multiplying each course's credit value by the grade point of its letter grade, summing those products, and dividing by the total credits. Courses worth more credits move the average more, which is why the same set of letter grades produces different averages under different credit distributions.

Enter one line per course: the credit value (ECTS or local credit) first, then the grade. The grade can be a letter (AA, BA, BB, CB, CC, DC, DD, FD, FF) or a number out of 100; grades out of 100 are converted to letters automatically using the widely applied Council of Higher Education table. The results give your GPA on the 4.0 scale, your total credits, and a course-by-course breakdown table.

One course per line: the credit first, then the grade. The grade can be a letter (AA–FF) or a number out of 100.

Grade Points and Thresholds Used in the GPA Calculation

The average is computed from the 4.0-scale grade points of the letter grades. The table below summarizes the grade points this calculator uses along with common thresholds such as graduation, the honor roll, and the high honor roll.

Letter grade points
AA 4.00 → FF 0.00
AA 4.00 · BA 3.50 · BB 3.00 · CB 2.50 · CC 2.00 · DC 1.50 · DD 1.00 · FD 0.50 · FF 0.00
Outright passing grade
CC (2.00) and above
DC and DD count as conditional passes; for them to hold, the overall grade point average must stay above the threshold
Minimum GPA for graduation
2.00
The GPA threshold commonly required to graduate from an undergraduate program; students who fall below it repeat courses
Honor roll
3.00 – 3.49
A widespread practice for students whose term average falls in this range and who have no failing course
High honor roll
3.50 – 4.00
Provided that no course is failing; the boundaries can vary slightly from one university to another

Formula

GPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) / Σ(Credit)
Grade point: AA=4.0 BA=3.5 BB=3.0 CB=2.5 CC=2.0 DC=1.5 DD=1.0 FD=0.5 FF=0.0
From a grade out of 100 to a letter: 90+ AA, 85–89 BA, 80–84 BB, 75–79 CB, 70–74 CC, ...

The common mistake is to average the grades without weighting them by credits; an FF in a 6-credit course does not affect the average the same way an FF in a 2-credit course does.

How to Calculate

  1. Write one line per course: the course credit first, then the grade (e.g. "5 AA" or "5 92").
  2. If you do not know the letter grade, enter the grade out of 100 and the calculator converts it using the widely applied conversion table.
  3. Press Calculate to see your 4.0-scale GPA, your total credits, and the course breakdown table.
  4. Use the breakdown table to check each course's grade point and its contribution to the average (credit × grade point).

Worked Examples

A term average from letter grades

For 5 credits of AA (4.00), 4 credits of BB (3.00), 3 credits of CC (2.00), and 6 credits of BA (3.50), the credit × grade point products are 20.00 + 12.00 + 6.00 + 21.00; dividing that total by 18 credits gives a GPA of 3.28.

Grade point average (GPA): 3.28 · Total credits: 18 · Number of courses: 4

Calculating from grades out of 100

The grades convert as 92 → AA (4.00), 78 → CB (2.50), 65 → DC (1.50), and 55 → FD (0.50). The credit × grade point products are 16.00 + 7.50 + 4.50 + 1.00; dividing by 12 total credits gives a GPA of 2.42.

Grade point average (GPA): 2.42 · Total credits: 12 · Number of courses: 4

The effect of a single FF

With 5 credits of AA (4.0) and 5 credits of a 45 (FF, 0.0): the total is 5×4 + 5×0 = 20 over 10 credits. GPA = 20/10 = 2.00 — a single FF halves an average that was otherwise built on an AA.

Grade point average (GPA): 2.00 · Total credits: 10 · Number of courses: 2

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a difference between GPA and CGPA?
Both refer to a credit-weighted grade point average; universities use different abbreviations (GPA, CGPA, GNO, AGNO). The method is identical: the sum of credit × grade point divided by the total credits. GPA usually refers to one term, CGPA to the cumulative average across all terms.
What grade point does each letter grade carry?
In the widely applied table, AA=4.0, BA=3.5, BB=3.0, CB=2.5, CC=2.0, DC=1.5, DD=1.0, FD=0.5, and FF=0.0. Some universities use intermediate grades such as B+ or C+, or different grade points; check your own regulations for the definitive table.
How is a grade out of 100 converted to a letter?
This calculator uses the common bands: 90 and above AA, 85–89 BA, 80–84 BB, 75–79 CB, 70–74 CC, 65–69 DC, 60–64 DD, 50–59 FD, and below 50 FF. Universities may set their own bands, and at some of them the letter grade is assigned relative to the class average (curved grading).
How does retaking a course change the average?
At most universities the latest grade for a repeated course counts and the old grade is removed from the average. To see the effect of retaking a course here, simply write the new grade on that course's line and recalculate.
What are the honor roll and high honor roll thresholds?
Common practice puts a term average of 3.00–3.49 on the honor roll and 3.50–4.00 on the high honor roll, with the additional requirement of no failing or non-attendance grades. The exact bounds vary slightly from one university to another.
What is the minimum average needed to graduate?
For undergraduate programs, a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 is the common rule. Students below 2.00 generally have to repeat conditional courses such as DC and DD, or their FF courses, to bring the average up.
