Azerbaijan: Population and Key Statistics

AsiaCapital: Baku#47 by population

With its rich oil and natural gas fields along the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan is the largest economy in the Caucasus. Baku was one of the first cities in the world where industrial-scale oil production took place, and today, too, most of the country's export revenue comes from the energy sector.

Bound to Turkey by close historical and cultural ties described as "two states, one nation," the country has gained a strategic position along energy corridors through the TANAP and TAP pipelines that carry Caspian gas to Europe.
