Bangladesh is home to more than 173 million people on a territory about one-fifth the size of Turkey; with more than 1,100 people per square kilometer, it is the world's most densely populated large country. The world's second-largest ready-made garment exporter after China, its economy is driven by the textile sector.

Having sharply reduced poverty over the past two decades and caught up with neighboring India in income per capita, Bangladesh is at the same time one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change: much of its territory consists of low-lying delta plains that regularly face the risk of floods and cyclones.
