At 2.38 million square kilometers, Algeria is the largest country in Africa. The Sahara covers more than 80% of its territory, and the overwhelming majority of the population lives along the narrow Mediterranean strip in the north.

One of Africa's largest natural gas exporters, the country is connected to Spain and Italy by undersea pipelines and has become an increasingly important supplier for a Europe seeking alternatives to Russia.
