Pakistan: Population and Key Statistics
With more than 251 million people, Pakistan is the world's fifth most populous country. With a median age of only 20.6, it has one of the world's youngest large societies; yet income per capita of roughly $1,500 shows that this demographic potential has not yet translated into economic prosperity.
The economy rests largely on agriculture and textile exports, and the Indus River basin feeds one of the world's largest irrigation systems. In recent years the country has faced serious economic and climate trials, including high inflation, a heavy external debt burden, and the devastating floods of 2022.

Expenditure figures come from SIPRI and personnel counts from the IISS, both distributed through the World Bank. Source years differ by indicator, so each figure is shown with its own year.
How Pakistan compares
The indicators use different scales, so the chart is a rough visual comparison only. For exact figures see the full side-by-side comparison.
