Ukraine: Population and Key Statistics

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe by area, excluding Russia. The Russian invasion that began in February 2022 contracted the economy by roughly a third in the first year, and with the displacement of millions of people the population has fallen from a prewar level of 43-44 million to around 38 million.

Thanks to its fertile black soil, Ukraine was one of the world's leading exporters of grain and sunflower oil before the war, and as of 2024 it is conducting EU accession negotiations. Because of wartime conditions, current statistics carry a high degree of uncertainty.
