An appliance's consumption is its power in watts multiplied by the time it runs: a 1,000 watt appliance running for 1 hour uses 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. Your bill is charged per kWh, so once you know how many hours a day an appliance actually runs, its monthly and yearly cost follows directly.

This calculator works out the daily, monthly (30 days), and yearly (365 days) kWh consumption of any appliance — air conditioner, boiler, refrigerator, heater, computer — and what that consumption costs in Turkish lira. Use it to put a number on 'how much is this air conditioner adding to my bill?' or to see how long an energy-efficient replacement takes to pay for itself.

Household Appliance Power Ratings and the Residential Tariff

The accuracy of the calculation depends on knowing the appliance's real power and how long it actually runs. The table below summarizes the typical power bands of the biggest electricity consumers in a home, along with the tiered tariff logic that shapes the bill for residential subscribers.

Daily consumption (kWh) = Power (watts) × Hours per day ÷ 1000
Monthly = Daily kWh × 30, Yearly = Daily kWh × 365
Cost = Consumption (kWh) × Unit price (₺/kWh)

Forgetting to divide watts by 1000 is the most common mistake and makes the result 1000 times too large. The second is using the bare energy price as the unit price: because the distribution charge and taxes are added to the bill, the real cost per kWh is roughly 30–40% higher than the figure in the tariff list.

Worked Examples

Air conditioner (1,800 W, 5 hours a day)

An 1,800 W air conditioner running 5 hours a day uses 9.00 kWh per day. At 2.60 ₺/kWh that is 23.40 ₺ a day, 702.00 ₺ a month, and 8,541.00 ₺ a year. Over a whole summer, the air conditioner is usually the largest single item on the bill.

Refrigerator (150 W, compressor running 8 hours a day)

A refrigerator stays plugged in around the clock, but its compressor runs roughly 8 hours a day. At 150 W for 8 hours the daily consumption is 1.20 kWh; the monthly 36.0 kWh costs 93.60 ₺ at 2.60 ₺/kWh, and the yearly 438 kWh costs 1,138.80 ₺.

Electric heater (2,000 W, 4 hours a day)

A 2,000 W heater running 4 hours a day uses 8 kWh: the monthly 240 kWh costs 624.00 ₺, and keeping that pace through the year gives 2,920 kWh and 7,592.00 ₺. Heaters are among the highest-wattage appliances in any home.

How much electricity does each household appliance use?
Typical power ratings: electric heaters and kettles 1,500–2,500 W, air conditioners 1,000–2,500 W, hair dryers 1,800–2,200 W, irons 2,000–2,800 W, washing machines about 500–800 W while running, refrigerator compressors 100–200 W, LED TVs 60–120 W, laptops 40–90 W, and LED bulbs 7–12 W. What exactly is a kWh?
A kilowatt-hour is the energy a 1,000 watt appliance uses in 1 hour. Electricity bills are issued per kWh. A 100 W television running for 10 hours also uses exactly 1 kWh: as long as power times duration is the same, the consumption is the same.
How do I find the real unit price on my bill?
Divide the total amount of the bill by the total kWh printed on it. Because that figure includes the energy charge, the distribution charge, and all taxes, it is noticeably higher than the bare energy price in the tariff list — and it is the correct number to use in a cost calculation.
My refrigerator runs 24 hours a day; what run time should I enter?
Thermostat-controlled appliances cycle on and off rather than running constantly: a refrigerator compressor is typically active between a third and a half of the day. Entering 6–10 hours a day is a realistic estimate. For a precise figure, plug in a socket energy meter and read the real 24-hour kWh value.
Does stand-by mode affect the bill?
Yes — a little, but constantly. Televisions, set-top boxes, and game consoles draw 0.5–5 W on stand-by. That looks negligible for one device, but ten devices in a home can add up to 100–300 kWh a year, which is a few hundred lira. Switching rarely used devices off completely at a switched socket is an easy saving.
What does moving to an A-class energy-efficient appliance save?
On the current energy label scale, an A-class refrigerator can use several hundred kWh less per year than an old, inefficient model. Work out the yearly saving by calculating both appliances separately here and taking the difference, then divide the price of the new appliance by that difference to see the payback period.
