The fuel cost of a journey rests on three values: the distance to be driven, the vehicle's average consumption (liters per 100 km), and the price per liter. Multiplying distance by consumption and dividing by 100 gives the liters burned; multiplying the liters by the price gives the total cost.

With one-way and round-trip options, this calculator works out the fuel bill for an intercity drive, a daily commute, or a holiday route. It also reports the cost per kilometer, so you can compare driving with the bus or the train, or split the cost of a trip between passengers.

2026 Average Fuel Consumption Reference Values

The accuracy of a fuel cost calculation depends on the average consumption you enter. The ranges below are real-world averages for the vehicle classes common in Turkey; if you know the figure from your own trip computer, entering that is always more accurate.

Fuel (L) = Distance (km) × Consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100
Total Cost = Fuel (L) × Price per liter (₺)
Cost per km = Total Cost ÷ Distance

Estimating consumption from 'I get so many km out of a tank' is a common mistake; tank size and driving conditions distort it. The average consumption on the trip computer, or a liter-per-km measurement taken between two full tanks, is far more accurate.

Worked Examples

Istanbul to Ankara, one way

The drive from Istanbul to Ankara is about 450 km. A petrol car using 7 L/100 km burns 450 × 7 ÷ 100 = 31.50 liters; at 48 ₺/L the total cost is 1,512.00 ₺, which is 3.36 ₺ per kilometer.

Istanbul to Ankara and back (diesel)

A diesel car using 5.5 L/100 km on the 450 km route there and back (900 km): 900 × 5.5 ÷ 100 = 49.50 liters, which at 48 ₺/L comes to 2,376.00 ₺. The cost per kilometer is 2.64 ₺; for one way, take half of the total.

The daily commute

Someone living 25 km from work, driving in the city at 8 L/100 km, covers 50 km a day: 50 × 8 ÷ 100 = 4 liters, which at 50 ₺/L is 200.00 ₺ a day (4.00 ₺ per km). For the monthly fuel bill, multiply that daily figure by the number of working days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my vehicle's average consumption?
The easiest way is the 'average consumption' screen on the trip computer. For a more precise measurement, fill the tank completely, reset the odometer, and at the next full fill-up divide the liters taken by the kilometers driven and multiply by 100. Catalog figures are usually 10–20% more optimistic than real-world use.
Why is city consumption different from highway consumption?
In the city, stop-and-go traffic, idling, and driving in low gears push consumption up: a petrol car burning 9–10 L/100 km in town can drop to 6 L/100 km at a steady speed on the motorway. For a mixed route, entering a weighted average of the two values gives a more realistic result.
How do we split the cost of a trip between passengers?
Divide the total cost by the number of people. On an Istanbul to Ankara trip costing 1,512 ₺ with 4 people, each pays 378 ₺. Remember to add the bridge and motorway tolls to the total before splitting it.
How do I calculate the cost for an LPG vehicle?
The formula is the same; enter the LPG consumption in the consumption field (roughly 15–25% more liters than petrol) and the LPG price per liter in the price field. Because LPG costs about half as much per liter, the total cost drops noticeably despite the higher consumption.
Are motorway and bridge tolls included?
No, this calculator covers fuel only. For a real travel budget, add the HGS toll charges along your route separately. Between Istanbul and Ankara, for example, using the Osmangazi Bridge or the Northern Marmara Motorway changes the total noticeably.
How do I compare the cost with an electric car?
For an electric car, consumption is in kWh/100 km and the price in ₺/kWh; the logic is identical. A car using 18 kWh/100 km covers 100 km for 90 ₺ on a 5 ₺/kWh night tariff — about a quarter of the 336 ₺ (7 L × 48 ₺) in our petrol example. You can also use our electricity consumption calculator.
