Fuel consumption is the amount of fuel a vehicle burns over 100 kilometers, and L/100km is the standard unit in Turkey and across Europe. The lower the figure, the more economical the car. Its inverse, km/L, tells you how many kilometers you can drive on one liter of fuel.

This calculator works out your car's real consumption from the fuel you put in the tank and the distance you covered. Catalog figures are measured under laboratory conditions and are usually exceeded in everyday driving, so knowing your real consumption under your own conditions is the most reliable way to budget for fuel and to spot developing faults early.

Consumption (L/100km) = Liters used / Kilometers driven × 100
Range (km/L) = Kilometers driven / Liters used
Example: 45 L / 600 km × 100 = 7.50 L/100km

L/100km and km/L are inverses of each other: km/L = 100 / (L/100km). To convert to MPG (miles per gallon) as used in the United States, apply 235.21 / (L/100km).

How to Calculate

  1. Fill the tank completely and reset the trip meter.
  2. Drive as you normally would; covering at least 300-400 km makes the result more reliable.
  3. Fill the tank again at the same station, up to the point where the pump first shuts off automatically.
  4. Enter the number of liters taken at the second fill-up and the distance on the trip meter into this calculator.
  5. Read the consumption per 100 km and the distance covered on one liter; averaging several fill-ups gives the most accurate figure.

Worked Examples

Mixed long-distance driving

A car that covers 600 km on 45 liters of fuel consumes 45 / 600 × 100 = 7.50 L/100km, which means it travels 13.33 km on one liter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is real consumption higher than the catalog figure?
Catalog figures (WLTP) are measured in a laboratory at a standard temperature and with a fixed driving profile. In real use, traffic, air conditioning, load, tire pressure, gradients, and driving style all push consumption up; a gap of 10-30% is normal. If you consistently see much higher figures, it is worth having the car serviced.
Why is the tank-to-tank method the most reliable?
The instant consumption readouts on the dashboard can be 5-10% optimistic because of the assumptions behind them. Using the liters and kilometers between two full tanks measures the fuel actually burned, so it gives the most accurate result. The average of several fill-ups is more reliable than a single measurement.
How do I convert between L/100km and km/L?
They are inverses of each other: km/L = 100 / (L/100km). A car consuming 8 L/100km, for example, travels 100/8 = 12.5 km per liter. A low L/100km figure and a high km/L figure both indicate an economical car.
Why is city consumption higher than highway consumption?
Stop-and-go traffic, idling, and driving in low gears all make the engine run inefficiently in the city, and pulling away from a standstill burns the most fuel. Outside the city you can cruise at constant revs, so consumption is typically 20-40% lower.
How can I reduce my fuel consumption?
Avoiding hard acceleration and braking, staying below 100-110 km/h, checking tire pressure once a month, removing unnecessary load, and keeping up with servicing can together save 10-20%. Consumption is very high over short trips while the engine is cold, so combining short journeys also helps.
How do I work out my fuel costs?
